- Does Thrombophilia Impact the Management of DVT? Mark Meissner, MD – Summary by Peggy Bush, APN ~ Third Venous Symposium, 2012

Last Updated: 5/21/2012

Very low incidence of forming a clot

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a multi-factorial disease
Thrombophilia present in up to 50% of cases of DVT, especially spontaneous
      Attributable risk is small

Routine Screening
     Does not alter prognosis
     Does not alter management
Not effective in identifying high population risks
     Misleading & expensive

You shouldn’t routinely do pre-determination tests for thrombophilia on patients undergoing outpatient venous procedures (Thermal ablations/phlebectomies)

Current guidelines recommend a limited role for selective testing
Absence of identified defect does not equal absence of thrombophilia
Limited positive predictive value for recurrence
Patient’s history is the most important determinant of prognosis/ previous clot       work them up
